Appointmment Made

Thanks for all the comments on my nutritionist post.  I called today and made the appointment for this Wednesday.  Also, made the appointment for my annual physical with my general practitioner.  Will get labs, etc. done.  I feel a little more in charge of health at this point and it feels good.

Nutritionist or not to Nutritionist?

Hi Blogland! I have had a nutso week and as a result have been self medicating with food.  I am sure the scale will tell the tale tomorrow when I weigh in.  I can imagine that it won't be pretty.

Holly has been home for the past day and a half day with a fever of 103.  (This is the part where I break into Foreigner's Hot Blooded...)   Poor baby went to the doctor, got her ears flushed and learned she had an ear infection to boot.  We are in cuddle, snuggle, and nurture mode right now.  The good news she should be better in the next 48 hours.

Since Holly has been sick, I have had a lot of quiet time to think and talk to myself as she sleeps in my arms.  I am pretty disgusted with myself and my eating, lack of energy to exercise, etc.  Believe me folks, I have a deep desire to be 100% committed to a new healthy lifestyle and making my 135 by 2012 goal, however, I can't seem to stay on track.  I let any ordinary obstacle get in my way and derail me even if I have only been on track for a day or even a half day.  I have to find a way to break this cycle and stick with it once and for all.  I am so tired of coming to this blog and having to update that I haven't made any progress.  I want to be one of my many blog friend inspirations with success stories, pictures and a new active lifestyle to report and in turn do my part to inspire others.

I have been toying with the idea of finding a nutritionist who can help me break this addiction to food in general but most specifically, fast food and sugar.  I have been having intense cravings for both and am losing the battle and caving in to my "drugs".  I of course am tired of spending $ on weight loss efforts and don't want someone who is going to tell me what I already know, or developing meal plans that I can create myself for free on Sparkpeople.com.  (My favorite website!)  So I did some research...

I found a program that will be basically be free for me (after insurance pays) since the providers are linked to the university I work for.  This program focuses on lifestyle redesign, including the obvious nutritional component, but with the added benefits of stress and time management, balancing work and personal life, incorporating the needed healthy lifestyle changes in your already hectic schedule, etc... HELLO, these are all the reasons I have been siting as the blame for my continued failure at this journey.  I found the website too late tonight to call for an appointment, but Monday, I will be making the call.  I figure with no out of pocket expense, why not try it?  Nothing to lose, right?  If I like what they have to say in my consult and decide to participate in the program, I will be sure to document my experience.  Fingers crossed this helps!

In other exciting news, I received in the mail today my loot from Katie J!  I will share with you all tomorrow my new exercise book and may even show a pic or two of me attempting some of the moves with my super cool new water bottle by my side.  Thanks, Katie!

A Family Outing

I am very excited to announce I won my very first giveaway in the blog world.  Katie J On Her Way, celebrated her 2 year blogiversary last week and had a special giveaway to celebrate.  I encourage anyone who hasn't visited her blog yet to stop by and check it out.  I find her strength, determination, honesty and success a great inspiration.  Her blog is one of my daily must reads.

Last weekend I decided to blow off chores on Sunday and have an old fashioned family day out to enjoy the sights of LA.  We decided to visit Santa Monica, which is the first time I had ever been in the 2.5 years I have lived here.  We walked, walked and walked.  Never stopped moving, except to have lunch, for 5.5 hours.  We walked the outdoor mall, Third Street Promenade, and new mall, Santa Monica Place, and walked to the the famous Santa Monica Pier.  In those 4 hours I burned a total of 1700 calories.  Woo Hoo!

 It was a bit windy and a little misty that day.

Valentine's Day was a low key affair this year, since it fell on a Monday. I did get surprise flowers at work, which unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of.  Daniel agreed to go to the Glee 2011 Tour concert with me in May and I bought the tickets, so that was our V-Day gift to each other.  We gave Holly a few trinkets and traded lots of kisses between the three of us.

We are coming up on a long weekend and I find myself searching for another fun family outing.  And hopefully, another powerhouse outing where I can burn 1700 calories.

Thank you, Baby Holly

Thank you, baby Holly, for helping to get mommy back on track in the mornings.

Lately, I have been lazy bones in the morning.  Probably because I am not sleeping well, and find myself going to sleep later and later as the week drags on.  Holly and I wake up with enough time to jump out of bed, shower, change and get the bottles ready for the day, before we dash out the door.  Breakfast for me has been on the run, followed by lunch on the run and then dinner (sometimes also on the run.)
Today was a little different.  Holly got me up bright and early at 6:22am this morning.  We started the day off right, by getting up and making our breakfast, getting our respected lunches and snacks ready for the day, followed by shower and dressing.

Thank you, baby Holly, for showing mommy your natural competitive spirit and perseverance.

Due to our early rise, I was a little early dropping Holly off at school.  I got to hang out for a few minutes to watch her play with the other toddlers.  They had a little game going, where the teacher would bounce a ball on the wall and the kids would go after it and bring back to her and repeat.  Holly immediately joined in with the other little girl who was playing.  Each time, Holly was quick to get the ball and bring it back.  Not in an obnoxious, push you out of the way kind of competition, but natural, go for it, this is fun kind of way.  I also got to witness Holly going for the ball in a few difficult, out of reach spots, and not stopping until she got what she wanted.  I swelled up with pride today and thought how much this little girl is like her mommy. 

Thank you, baby Holly, for reminding me of who I really am.

I am competitive.  I stop at nothing to achieve what I want and try, try again until I succeed or sometimes over achieve.   Why do I choose to be competitive in some areas of life (career, higher education, etc.) but not in others (health, fitness, etc.)?  

I have achieved a lot, overcoming obstacles, taking the long way, rather than short cuts, to make me a stronger person.  I just never applied it to every aspect of my life.  Is it because I am so focused and driven to prove myself or excel in career and family that I spend all my energy focused on those subjects and don’t have enough time and energy to focus on the others?     

My #1 excuse for not being able to manage the health and fitness side of life is because I can’t balance home and work life.  Is this why?  If I focused less on career, and applied that energy to health would I be just as driven and successful?  Do I really have too much on my plate and can only focus on one or two things at a time to be successful?   I really hope not, because I want it all.  I want to be good at it all.  I just need to figure out how.
