Hello Old Friend!

Oh Cobb salad, how I have missed you.

Yup, you guessed it, Cobb salad for lunch today.  I am slowly getting back into the groove of things. One day meal at a time.

Oh no, not again!

In an effort to keep myself honest, with, well, myself, I am keeping up with my weekly weigh in's and posting the pictures here, no matter how good, bad or ugly.  Well, this week is an ugly one.  This picture is from my regularly scheduled Wednesday weigh in.  As usual, work trumped blog and I didn't have a chance to post yesterday.

Sorry, the picture is in the correct landscape position on my photo editor.  Not sure why they keep flipping when I post here.
So the results:  327.4 = Gain of 3.5 lbs.

It was another one of those drop everything and focus on work weeks.  I had several late nights at the office, not getting home until 10pm or later.  I also had the challenge of missing my husband and daughter over the weekend.  Daniel's step-grandmother passed away last Thursday and he took Holly up to a little town outside of San Jose for several days to spend time with the family and attend the services.  I couldn't go because of work.  So I spent the weekend catching up on some much needed sleep and spending the day at the office on Sunday.  Overall it was a terribly lonely, stressful and exhausting week.  I wasn't sleeping well due to the stress.  I wasn't eating well, as I was hitting drive-thru after drive-thru for breakfast and dinners.  (Which were all very late night dinners.)  I wasn't exercising, or drinking the water I needed to.  All in all, a really sucky week and the scale reflected it.

So, what I am I doing to get back on track?  Well, tonight I am planning on attending Slimmons for the first time in what feels like forever.  I need the exercise to get my mood to boost and hopefully, improve my sleeping.  Afterwards, I am going to have a much needed lady-date with Alexa and Heidi.

Daniel and I have plans to walk after work on Friday night, and as Saturday starts the first weekend of October, we are making our monthly trip to Disneyland.  That should be a very active day.  I need the Disney boost too.  I really do have a complete change of attitude when I walk through those gates.  I might even request a special Sunday visit, but that might be pushing it.  I do have another commitment and Daniel has football watching planned with my mom.

So there you have it.  I am not proud, and it just proves that I am consistent with losing weight and quickly gaining it right back again a week or two later.  I know that I have the ability to make some positive changes and deal with the stress, eating late, etc. but I just didn't have the energy, or desire to do it.  I am hoping to get that mojo back this week.

Weigh In

This is going to be a quick post, just to update you with my weigh in.  It wasn't what I expected, but in a good way.  I basically maintained this week.  I am down to 323.9.  I guess the scale gods where smiling down on me to keep me going, encouraged, etc and it worked.  I can put this past week behind me and focus on the next several days.

Not sure why it flipped upside down.  When I view on my photo editor it is the right side up.  Weird.

Hope you all are having a happy and healthy week!

Day 7 - Day 11 Blues

Day 7 - 10 have been a touch stressful with a sick baby, and two trays of brownies made by my mother.  I totally caved with the brownies, by the way.  They are the #1 enemy in my house, because I really can't say no to them.  Had a few talks with my mom about the brownie issue and she understands, but gives me the , why does she have to go without because I can't have them speech.  I know exactly how she feels about that, because currently, we are all trying to go "low carb" because Daniel's diabetes is getting out of control and really needs to focus on the healthier diet.  I hate going low carb, but I do it so he isn't tempted and so that he has a partner in this lifestyle.  I am not perfect with the low carb and have my moments when I prepare something inappropriate just like my mom did with the brownies. (Pumpkin cupcakes, hello!)  How can I expect her to change when I pull the same stunt with my husband?  This is going to be something I focus on this week. I am frustrated that this lifestyle is not an easy transition and feels like an uphill battle each and every day.  Does it ever get easier?

In other news, I haven't worked out in almost a week.  I stayed home from work on Thursday, because Holly and I were sick.  I didn't go to Slimmons that night, which was a good thing, because I ended up having to take Holly to the Urgent Care office that night.  She was fine the second we walked through the door and we got to go home soon after.  I stayed home with her again on Friday, which led into the weekend.  Saturday morning rolled around and after two whole days with the baby, I didn't want to leave her.  I decided I would just devote the rest of the weekend to her.  Again, another skipped Slimmons class.

Which brings me to the root cause of my blues this Monday morning, I just didn't want to go to work today and leave her.  I guess I have a touch of separation anxiety today. I miss her something terrible during the week.  5 days a week I work 8+ hours a day, and two of those days, I don't see her at all.  The weekends roll around and I miss half of Saturday with her because I go to Slimmons.  It breaks my heart not spending enough time with her.  But, I also need to do this so I can lose the weight so I have more time with her in the long run.  It also breaks my heart to see her to so attached to my mom and wants her to do everything for her/with her when I am home.  I know it is just because my mom is home during the day taking care of her, and it is what she is used to, but still.  It stings a little.  After being home with her for the past 4 days, she went back to wanting me all the time.  I loved it, even if it was short term.

Are you still reading this?  I have babbled on for a while, so sorry about that.  I just wanted to get it off my chest.

PS - To fix my mom's sweet tooth, I found a low calorie option for her.  The pumpkin cupcakes Gina from posted last week.  They were low calories and delicious!  This was a sweet treat that I could have in the house and it not be much of a temptation for me and my husband.  We were easily able to control ourselves with these.  If you love pumpkin, you should try them.

Day 4 - 6 with a Weigh In!

That crazy thing called life kept me from keeping up with the blog this week.  But not to worry, it was a stellar week, as documented by my scale.

As of this morning, I weighed in at 324.5, which is a 4.2lb loss from last week.  YES!!!  I was surprised to see such a high number because my total exercise count for last week was one session at Slimmons.  I did some running around doing errands and the usual Holly chase, which I suppose contributed :)  My goal last week was to start exercising at the new gym at work on my off Slimmons days.  Well, I was a bit naive  thinking that I could go to Slimmons at night, wake up a few hours later and do another workout first thing in the AM.  I tried, and I just can't do it. I am either way too tired or too sore.  I am going to have to stick to evening workouts.  Hopefully, the excitement of the gym will die down after work hours and I can get a cardio machine without having to wait forever.  This saga is to be continued.

Over the weekend, we did some light grocery shopping, but focused on getting our fridge cleaned up and using what we have on hand.  Here are a few of the veggies I prepped this week:

I started off cutting up one of my new favorites, Jicama.  I used this one veggie in three different ways this week.  1.)  Cut up into sticks for snacking.  It was a nice change up from the usual carrots, celery, squash combo.

2.)  I added to the relish seen below that will be used to top my rice and chicken tonight and throughout the rest of the week.  In addition to the jicama, the relish was made up of the veggies that really needed to be used up before they went bad.  In the batch, I have a mix of cucumber, sweet peppers, radishes, onion and jicama.  I added the juice of one lime and a little salt and pepper.

3.)  I also cubed up my jicama and added it to the rest of the veggies that I roasted on Monday with our pork tenderloin.  Pictured below is a butternut squash, rutabagas and purple potatoes.  (Also roasted, but not pictured were onions and garlic.)  I tossed them all in 2 teaspoons of olive oil, added some garlic/herb seasoning mix and they were ready to roast.

Of course I don't have any pictures of the final products because meal time is crazy in our house and once Holly gets settled, everyone rushes to make their plates and eat before she decides she is finished.  One of these days though, I will get it together ;)  Baby steps, people.

So far, so good this week.  I hope you too are all  having a happy and healthy week.

Day 3 - Slimmons Time!

Thursday or Thorsday as my nordic god/superhero loving husband would say, was by my standards fantastic.

I started off my day eating a batch of steel cut oats that my husband had prepared on Sunday.  He made a little extra for me to try and I finally got around to it.  I added a splash of milk, because after 4 days in the fridge it looked a little stiff, and reheated in the microwave.  Afterward, I added 2 teaspoons of brown sugar, a handful of pomegranate craisins and a tablespoon of walnuts.  Let me tell you - Delish!  I like it a billion times better than the instant oatmeal packets.  By adding the dried fruit and nuts, it tasted similar to the perfect oatmeal I have been getting at Starbucks.  I ate it around 6:30 and it kept me full until 10:30 - 11am.  I should have packed a small snack to hold me till lunch, but I made it through.  DOUBLE THUMBS UP!  Daniel will have to make a couple extra servings for me to have during the week.

Midday, I got over to the new building at work where the gym is located.  I did a quick tour and signed up.  I am an official member and will be working out there on Monday - Wednesday and Friday mornings.  The equipment is all new and state of the art.  As one of my colleagues said, they have tv's on the cardio equipment, so we can watch Cupcake Wars while we workout.  LOL!  They have a great shower and locker room facility and room for me to get dressed and ready for work.  I look forward to the new routine.

That evening, I got out of work at 5pm and made it to Slimmons with plenty of time to greet my friends and catch up on the happenings from the past few weeks.  This group of friends were a sight for sore eyes and the much needed comfort I have been seeking.  Having someone there in the trenches with you makes all the difference in the world.  Blogger friends are the best!!

About a month ago after a sweaty work out.  Holly and I with Heidi, Finishing the Hat and Alexa, The Cuvy Nerd.
The workout kicked my butt, but was great.  We had three of the people from TMZ show doing our class with us, which was good times.  Good to know they sweat as much as I do.

Friday, will bring some eating out challenges (possibly lunch and dinner) and workout at the new gym.  Will let you know how it goes.

Happy a happy and healthy day :)

Day 2 - Keepin' On The Right Path

Wednesday started off with a challenge, but I made it work.  I got up to hit that new gym at work, but they didn't have anyone there at 6am who could register me, so they didn't let me in.  Instead of slumping off, I took the opportunity to walk the parking garage before it started filling up with cars and did a couple flights of stairs.  I didn't work up too much of a sweat, because I didn't have a place to shower and clean up.  (Thank you gym people.)

Eats were good again.  I didn't write it down and track, but I made good choices.  I have salad coming out of my ears, but it has been extra tasty and a little different due to a new salad dressing I bought for the first time.  I am now obsessed with the Bolthouse Farms Yogurt dressings. (Danger, mini review alert.  I think this is my first one.  Bolthouse Farms did not ask me to write this review or compensated me in anyway.  I just wanted to share with you an awesome product I tried.)

One of the lifestyle changes I have successfully made in these past 20 months is the significant reduction of creamy salad dressings.  Creamy dressings haven't been 100% banned from my life.  The ranch dressing does get ordered on occasion or maybe some blue cheese dip for my carrots and celery on baked hot wings night.  Other than that, I stick to the tried and true oil and vinegar.  The Bolthouse Farms Yogurt Dressings have been mentioned on several of the blogs I follow and I when I saw it on sale, I jumped at the chance to try it.  (2/ $4.00 at Sprouts the other week).  I picked up the Blue Cheese and Creamy Italian flavors to try.  My first test was Creamy Italian.  Let me just say AMAZING!  To me it tastes exactly like one of my old favorites, Marie's Creamy Italian dressing, which has become a no no in my household.  (Both can be found in the refrigerated section of the produce area.)  You can check out the nutritional information here.  They use only natural ingredients and no preservatives.  I haven't checked the expiration date, but I assume they have a short shelf life.  I haven't had a chance to try the Blue Cheese, but plan on it when we make buffalo chicken salad one night this week.  It was a fun way to change up what has become my usual boring salads.

I also weighed myself on Wednesday morning.  It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.  I clocked in at 328.7.  I was over 331 at my final weigh in with the Occupational Therapist a few weeks ago, so I am already doing better.  I am going to make Wednesday's my new official weigh in day.  Mid week weigh in's will be a better behavior control for me than Friday mornings.  Friday morning weigh in meant I would eat out over the weekend and think I still had 5 days to lose whatever I gained during weekend extravagance.

Today is Thursday, and I am going to Slimmons for the first time in weeks.  I missed it so much as well as my friends there.  I am soooo looking forward to sweating and letting you know all about it.

Hope you all are having a happy and healthy day :)

Day 1 - Good Start

Thank you so much for all your kind and supportive comments on yesterday's post. I really appreciate you and the support you lend in times of need.  It is great to be part of such a caring community.  Thank you.

I had a good day today, despite some obstacles.  I got up late, after having only slept 3 hours.  (Thank you, Holly.  Mommy won't hold it against you. ;)  So morning was rushed and I ran out the door without my packed breakfast and lunch.  Not need to fret though.  I didn't have drive thru, I got eggs and a slice of wheat toast.  I drank plenty of water and had a cobb salad for lunch.

My next obstacle was getting to exercise.  I had a late, last minute meeting that kept me from getting on the road and to Beverly Hills in time to make Slimmons.  I was pretty upset about it, but I know that duty calls sometimes.  I didn't get home until 7pm and was starving.  I made Amy Lou Chicken Burgers that I got from Costco and paired it with a bowl of my husbands beans and greens soup.  It was pretty delicious and filling.  A quick and easy meal.
After dinner, mommy duties called and I had bath and bedtime instead of sweating and moving.  I also forgot to weigh myself this morning before my shower.  I will be sure to get that chore done tomorrow.  Over all I think this was a great day.

Can you say avoidance?

Avoidance is my middle name these days.  In fact, I wrote that sentence and paused to watch reality tv for a full 5 minutes before coming back to the post.  What am I avoiding?  My blog.  Why am I avoiding my blog?  Because I feel like an utter weight loss failure.  I realized I am successful at losing and gaining the same 20lbs for the past 20.5 months.

I am on a gaining cycle right now.  That 16lbs that I lost has been gained back in the past month.  Why?  I would love to blame it on my sister, who, since staying with us for the past 5 weeks has brought every type of cookie, cake, ice cream and bad habit into my house.  But she just brought the temptation, I am the one who gave in.  I knew I was gaining, but avoided the scale.  Instead, I went back to old habits of daily fast food breakfast, diet coke instead of water and an uncontrollable desire for sweets.  I have had some good days mixed in, but not enough to make a difference.

So today I confess my sins and tomorrow I wake up with a clean slate.  Steel cut oats are cooked and packed up for tomorrow's breakfast, as well as a beans and greens soup and salad for lunch.  The Bodybugg is charged and the workout clothes are packed.  I am planning on going back to Slimmons tomorrow night.  I have been gone for a few weeks due to work schedule.  I am also joining the gym at my work and will be doing early morning workouts on the off Slimmons days.  Tomorrow, will also be a weigh in day for me just so I have a starting point using my scale.  No more of the weight loss management program weigh ins, so now it is time to start tracking on my own scale.

Here I go again.
